Register of Deeds Notice
The Register of Deeds office is open, but in-person services should only be used as a last resort. To obtain a marriage license or be sworn-in as a notary public, you must come in person. Otherwise, most of our services are available from home. If you need a birth, death, or marriage certificate, simply click here to purchase one, and we will mail it directly to you. If you have questions about getting a copy of a deed, please give us a call or email us. To search our database of property records dating back to the 1700s, click here.
If you need in-person services, we ask that you only come in if you are not sick and that you wear a mask. We promise that only healthy staff are allowed to serve you.
To purchase a birth certificate in person, please bring your valid photo ID and payment to our office at 205 College St.
Certified records can only be issued to immediate family or an authorized agent.
Please send a copy of your valid photo ID, check or money order, and the completed Vital Records Request Form to:

Purchase a certified copy of a Buncombe County birth certificate, death certificate, or marriage certificate to be mailed.
We accept the following payment types of purchasing a birth certificate.
Each certified record costs $10.00, and non-certified records cost $0.25 each. If you are 62 or older, you may receive one (1) certified copy of your birth certificate free of charge.
Note: Please make personal checks, or money orders payable to Register of Deeds.
The following information applies to the birth certificate of any individual born in Buncombe County. For information about obtaining a birth certificate from this office for a person born in another county in North Carolina, please visit our Statewide Birth Certificate.
We can assist with the amendment/legitimization of Birth Records for a fee of $35.
Note: We do recommend if you were born in another county other than Buncombe County and need to do an amendment or legitimation, you should do this process in the county in which you were born.
By law, all Adoption Records are removed from this office and must be obtained from Vital Records in Raleigh, NC..
