Register of Deeds Notice

Birth, Death and Marriage Certificates

All certified copies of birth, death and marriage certificates will be available for purchase online. If you have an immediate need for a certificate you can purchase it at the Register of Deeds office, otherwise we ask that you use our user-friendly online system.

Marriage Licenses

Marriage licenses are available at our office Monday – Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with no appointment required. Couples must come in person because we have to verify each person’s identity, proof of social security and see them sign the license. Couples must fill out the online marriage application before coming to the office. Once your online application is complete please write down your confirmation number then bring that number with you. Please note that only the couple is allowed in the office at this time due to our occupancy limit.

Notary Oaths

Once commissioned by the Secretary of State, Buncombe County Notaries Public must appear at Register of Deeds office to take an oath of office and obtain a certificate.

Recording Real Estate documents

During this State of Emergency, we encourage all documents to be electronically recorded when possible. For those who want to record paper documents, please use the black drop box located just outside of our office during regular business hours: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The drop box will be checked multiple times throughout the day and all documents that are dropped off by 4:30 p.m. will be recorded the same day.

Assumed Business Name certificates

A Certificate of Assumed Business Name (or DBA) form can be recorded at our office by individuals conducting business in North Carolina. These forms are available online. The completed form can be mailed into our office at 205 College Street or can be dropped off for recording in the black drop box directly outside the office. If you would like us to email you a copy of the recorded document, please enclose your email address in the envelope. If you have questions, please call us at 828-250-4302.

Plats

Plats can be electronically recorded with our office. For surveyors who are recording paper or mylar surveys, there will continue to be a red plat drop box at the entrance of 205 College Street. Please call 250-4302 to notify us when you’ve dropped off your plats, so they can be retrieved as soon as possible. Please do not drop off plats outside of business hours.


If you are seeking in-person services, we ask that you only come if you are not sick. Additionally, we promise that only healthy staff are allowed to serve you.

Assumed Names (DBA)

An Assumed Business Name Certificate or “doing business as’ (DBA) form, once recorded, notifies the public that you are doing business in any or all North Carolina counties under a particular name.

A Certificate of Assumed Name or “doing business as” (DBA) form can be recorded in our office by individuals or entities conducting business in Buncombe County, multiple counties or all 100 counties in North Carolina. A sole proprietorship, general partnership, limited partnership, LLC or corporation engaged in business in Buncombe County under a different assumed name might consider recording a DBA form at the Buncombe County Register of Deeds Office. In many cases, a financial institution will require this form be recorded in order to open a business account. Please consult a business advisor or an attorney if you have questions about whether recording this form is required for your business.

The Assumed Business Name Certificate, Amendment and Withdrawal Forms are available below in fillable PDF format for your convenience. Please make sure all information is accurate, typed or printed legibly and please follow instructions included with the form.

The fee for recording is $26.00. Please leave a blank 3” margin at the top of the page and ¼” for all other borders. A document not meeting these standards may be subject to a $25.00 non-standard fee.

You may bring the original document in person or mail in the original, signed form to Register of Deeds, 205 College Street, Asheville, NC 28801. If submitting via mail, payment by check or money order is accepted.

IMPORTANT NOTICE REGARDING LAW CHANGE:

Please be aware that all Certificates of Assumed Name filed before December 1, 2017, will have an expiration date of December 1, 2022, according to NC House Bill 228.

If you have filed an assumed name in the past or will file one before December 1, 2017 and intend to continue engaging in business in North Carolina using the assumed name on or after December 1, 2022, you must file a new Assumed Business Name Certificate form as required by the new law.

Assumed Business Name Certificates filed on or after December 1, 2017, will not expire under the new law.
