Register of Deeds Notice

Birth, Death and Marriage Certificates

All certified copies of birth, death and marriage certificates will be available for purchase online. If you have an immediate need for a certificate you can purchase it at the Register of Deeds office, otherwise we ask that you use our user-friendly online system.

Marriage Licenses

Marriage licenses are available at our office Monday – Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with no appointment required. Couples must come in person because we have to verify each person’s identity, proof of social security and see them sign the license. Couples must fill out the online marriage application before coming to the office. Once your online application is complete please write down your confirmation number then bring that number with you. Please note that only the couple is allowed in the office at this time due to our occupancy limit.

Notary Oaths

Once commissioned by the Secretary of State, Buncombe County Notaries Public must appear at Register of Deeds office to take an oath of office and obtain a certificate.

Recording Real Estate documents

During this State of Emergency, we encourage all documents to be electronically recorded when possible. For those who want to record paper documents, please use the black drop box located just outside of our office during regular business hours: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The drop box will be checked multiple times throughout the day and all documents that are dropped off by 4:30 p.m. will be recorded the same day.

Assumed Business Name certificates

A Certificate of Assumed Business Name (or DBA) form can be recorded at our office by individuals conducting business in North Carolina. These forms are available online. The completed form can be mailed into our office at 205 College Street or can be dropped off for recording in the black drop box directly outside the office. If you would like us to email you a copy of the recorded document, please enclose your email address in the envelope. If you have questions, please call us at 828-250-4302.

Plats

Plats can be electronically recorded with our office. For surveyors who are recording paper or mylar surveys, there will continue to be a red plat drop box at the entrance of 205 College Street. Please call 250-4302 to notify us when you’ve dropped off your plats, so they can be retrieved as soon as possible. Please do not drop off plats outside of business hours.


If you are seeking in-person services, we ask that you only come if you are not sick. Additionally, we promise that only healthy staff are allowed to serve you.

Plats

Plats are part of the real estate records archived at the Register of Deeds Office.

Special laws govern the recording of surveys, which are referred to as plats once they are recorded. Buncombe County returns all plats at time of recording. All recorded plats are available on our online record lookup.

Plat Recording Requirements:

  • Acceptable sizes are 18” x 24” and 24” x 36” with at least 1/2'’ border on all sides.
  • Plats must be reproducible and be black ink on white paper, Mylar or other archival material.
  • The Register of Deeds checks for surveyor original seal and wet-ink signature and statements as required by G.S. 47-30.
  • Certain plats will need to be reviewed by the county or city review officer before recording.

Illustrative Plats

Maps attached to Deeds or Other Instrument

Attached maps or surveys that are exhibits to other legal documents can be letter (8" x 11") or legal size (8" x 14") and should conform to one of the following three options:

  • The Survey is an original map with a surveyor's seal and original signature and meets all other recording requirements for plats, including Review Officer's approval, if applicable.
  • A certified copy of a recorded plat.
  • Attached map or survey contains this statement: “This map may not be a certified survey and has not been reviewed by a local government agency for compliance with any applicable land development regulations and has not been reviewed for compliance with recording requirements for plats.”
NOTE: Please be aware that attached map exhibits with font size smaller than 9 or containing color or gray areas will be charged a $25.00 non-standard fee. View Recording Standards
