Volunteer

BCPL appreciates our volunteers. Our three main types of volunteers are:

Story readers in local child care centers

Our Preschool Outreach Program (POP) uses volunteers to read stories to children in local child care centers. Story Time volunteers must be 18 years or older.

Friends of the Library Volunteers

The Friends generally use volunteers to prepare for book sales, provide refreshments for author receptions, and to fundraise for specific branches.

Volunteens - Teen Library Volunteers

We use teen volunteers to prepare craft materials, help with programs, and other library assistant duties.

Friends of the Library

The Friends are a source of volunteers and are visible supporters of the library's mission.

The Friends of Buncombe County Libraries, Inc. assist the public libraries in making the community aware of its services and its needs. Furthermore, they supplement the majority of funding for adult’s and children’s programming. They also purchase furniture and equipment that is not available through county funds.

The major Friends fundraisers are used book sales at every branch library. In addition, the Friends have a used book store called “Bookends” at Pack Memorial Library in downtown Asheville. Bookends is open during library hours and has previously enjoyed books, movies and music for all ages.

Membership

Friends’ membership dues are $15 for one year and can be purchased at any library. Membership dues go directly to the library where the donation is made, so your dollars will stay in your community. With your Friends membership you will get a subscription to the library newsletter and early admission to most library book sales. The Friends of Buncombe County Libraries, Inc. is a registered 501(c)3 organization and all donations are tax-deductible.

Officers and Meetings

The Friends of Buncombe County Libraries, Inc. elect officers at their August meeting. Terms are for one year and the By-laws state no rules about term limits.

Volunteers

Volunteers are typically recruited through Friends of the Library organizations. Volunteers offer valuable behind-the-scenes work on special projects, such as preparations for book sales, providing refreshments for author receptions, offering transportation for guest speakers, etc. Get involved with your local Friends group and volunteer!

Donations

The Friends of the library happily accept donations of money, books or time.

Donations of books are accepted at all library locations. If the book is needed in the collection, it will be put it on the shelf. Otherwise, the donated copy will be put in the Friends of the Library book sale.

All the money raised from the Friends sale goes to the library to purchase new books and materials.

You can drop your books off at any library and get a tax receipt if you need one. For a list of all Friends of the Library book sales, check the library events calendar.

Volunteers can pick up large donations.

No encyclopedia, text book, or magazine donations please.
