The Sheriff’s Office has 29 SROs who are sworn deputies at 42 schools across Buncombe County. Our mission is mentoring and counseling kids. We hope to build strong relationships with our youth in order to deter them from using drugs and alcohol. We are acutely aware of the changing needs of our students and part of our training includes how to engage with students who have behavioral challenges. We work to build trust, so that they feel comfortable bringing issues of bullying or problems they might be experiencing at home to us. SROs have been trained to keep our schools safe by participating in active-shooter drills as well as holding CPR certification.
