The Landfill's mission is to protect the health and safety of all citizens by disposing of all waste generated in Buncombe County in the most efficient, cost effective and environmentally sound manner possible.


Please adhere to the following safety guidelines while onsite:

  • Remain in the immediate vicinity of your vehicle at all times; loitering is not permitted and extremely unsafe!
  • All children under the age of 15 MUST remain in the vehicle at all times
  • Wear close toed shoes and high visibility clothing

Landfill Disposal Rates

NOTE: Buncombe County Landfill does not accept non-infectious medical waste.

For Citizens

  • 33-gallon bags:
    • $2/bag
  • Less than 33-gallon bags:
    • $1/bag
  • Pick-up trucks, vans or small trailers:
    • $43.75/ton, @ $10 minimum

For Commercial/Franchise Haulers

  • All trucks, roll-offs, or flat bed (compacted or otherwise) of solid wastes which contain less than 5% by weight or volume of any of the following wastes will pay $43.75/Ton at the Landfill:
    • corrugated cardboard,
    • untreated wood products suitable for mulching,
    • concrete, cinder blocks, brick,
    • concrete with steel or any type metals
  • First violation above the 5% limit: $86/ton
    • Second violation or any subsequent violation occurring within 6 months of the first violation: $129/ton
  • Untreated wood, limbs, yard wastes or other materials suitable for mulching: $20/ton
  • Friable asbestos: $100/ton @ $100 minimum
    • NOTE: 24 hour notice and appointment required
  • Tires accepted with original scrap tire certification form only - $0.00
  • Tires without form: $2/tire
  • Electronics recycling—limit 5 units: $0.30/pound. Businesses with large quantities of electronics must call for prior approval by calling (828) 250-5462.

NOTE: Please take recyclables out of blue bags before depositing them at the landfill and transfer station.

    • leaves must be in bags and separated from wood and other yard waste
  • Wood pallets - $20/ton

Residential Co-Mingled Recyclables

  • Metal Cans - Aluminum, Steel, Tin, EMPTY Aerosol cans
  • Plastic - Bottles, Jugs, and Containers with recycling numbers #1 - #7 such as plastic yogurt containers, margarine tubs, and plastic take out containers.
  • Glass - Bottles and Jars (clear, brown, green)
  • Aluminum - Pie Tins, Food Trays
  • Paper Cartons - Milk & Juice Cartons and Juice Boxes
  • Newspapers and inserts
  • Mixed Paper - Catalogs, Junk mail, Magazines, Cereal boxes, paper Egg Cartons, Envelopes, Manila envelopes, Office paper, Paper, Phone books, Glossy paper, Post-It-Notes, Brown paper bags, Paper towel rolls
  • Shredded paper - place in a paper bag with the top rolled closed

What is NOT Recyclable?

Light bulbs & Plastic bags

Some fluorescent-type bulbs can be recycled on TV/Paint Days at the Landfill, or dropped off at Home Depot or Lowes.

Plastic bags that are clean, dry, and empty can be brought back to retailers that provide designated plastic bag recycling bins—you can find drop-off locations at stores like Ingles, Harris Teeter, or Lowes.


TV & Paint Recycling

Electronics — Televisions — Household Hazardous Waste — Light Bulbs

Buncombe County Landfill accepts Televisions and Electronics ONLY during TV/Paint Recycling events.

Electronics/TV/Paint Recycling and Fees

We accept most electronics—aside from televisions—from residents at no charge. Businesses can recycle electronics at the cost of $0.30 cents per pound. No hazardous wastes from businesses will be accepted.

The following items must be separated out of loads and brought to the electronics recycling area:

  • Cell Phones; Computers and computer-related electronics like monitors, CPUs, and keyboards - $0.00
  • Televisions
    • Under 19" inches - $5
    • Over 19" inches - $10
  • Pesticides including herbicides, insecticides, fungicides - $0.00
  • Automotive Fluids such as motor oil, antifreeze, coolant; and Lead acid batteries - $0.00
  • Flammable liquids like gasoline and kerosene; and Paint and paint-related items such as water sealer, paint thinners, enamels, polyurethane, etc.
    • $2 per gallon @ 20-gallon limit per week.

NOTE: Bio-Hazardous materials, radioactive materials and explosives are NOT accepted at any time.


Light Bulbs

Mercury-containing fluorescent lights can be recycled at the landfill during the TV/Paint/Household Hazardous Waste program with a maximum of 20 bulbs per month. Lowes and Home Depot also accept the small screw in type bulbs for recycling, but do not accept broken or long tube type bulbs. Fluorescent lights can also be disposed of with your regular garbage. Broken bulbs cannot be recycled and should be placed with your regular garbage.
