Immunizations for Infants & Toddlers

Protect your child: Immunizations provide a shield of protection from dangerous diseases. Infants and toddlers are at high risk for serious medical problems — including death — from vaccine-preventable diseases such as measles, whooping cough, and chicken pox. It is important that caregivers and those around infants and toddlers are fully vaccinated as well. This creates a wall of protection for little ones. Talk to your doctor or call the Immunization Clinic with any questions you might have about immunizations.

Your Child's Immunization Records

Your child's immunization records are often required to register children for school, participate on athletic teams, attend summer camps or travel outside the United States. It is also important to have your child's immunization records so you can know when they need different immunizations or booster shots as they get older. Talk to your doctor or call our Immunization Clinic with questions or to obtain official copies of immunization records.

Buncombe County participates in the Vaccines for Children (VFC) program which provides vaccines to eligible young people up to 18 years old at no charge. To be eligible, the child must meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Medicaid eligible,
  • American Indian or Alaskan Native, or
  • Uninsured. Underinsured means a child has health insurance, but it won’t cover vaccine (s) because it doesn’t cover any vaccines, it doesn’t cover certain vaccines, or it covers vaccines but it has a fixed dollar limit or cap for vaccines. Once that fixed dollar amount has been reached, a child is eligible.

*You don’t have to be a US citizen to be eligible for this program

For more information or to determine if your child is eligible for the VFC program call (828) 250-5096. Please bring your child's insurance card with you if they have one as well as their immunization card showing past immunizations.

Plus, older kids can develop risks for other diseases such as meningitis and HPV through the different activities and social settings that they encounter during this period of their lives.
