George Ellison was an iconic writer of Western North Carolina and lived directly adjacent to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and the Cherokee Indian Reservation. The Land of Blue Shadows is a posthumous collection of his poetry that was collected and illustrated by his descendants, Elizabeth and Quintin Ellison. Elizabeth and Quintin will visit the Pack Library and give a presentation about the book and the processes they used to curate the poetry and create the artwork it is composed of. Participants can buy copies of the book on site through Malaprop's Bookstore. Register in advance to guarantee a seat!

Through June 10, the exhibition “And the green grass grows all around and around and the green grass grows all around” will be on view in Special Collections, featuring work by Swannatopia Experimental Art Club paired with library research resources that highlight the histories of agriculture and arboriculture in our region. Swannatopia’s installation offers “a glimpse into the vision—trees and seeds in anticipation of spring days to come.”

Visitors can also view selected photographs, ephemera, and artifacts related to our regional National Parks on display in the hall outside of the Buncombe County Special Collections reading room.  In addition, Pack Youth Services will feature a selection of books for kids of all ages on hiking and outdoor activities.
