Buncombe County Special Olympics is seeking cheerleaders to cheer for the Special Olympic events scheduled for fall and winter. Sign ups begin on August 3 and end on August 31. Practice starts in September.
All athletes must have a complete and current physical and a consent form on file in order to participate. Forms can be picked up from Grace Young, area programmer, at Buncombe County Parks, Greenways and Recreation Services Administrative Office. The office is located at 59 Woodfin Place, Asheville, NC 28801.
Special Olympic cheerleaders are a precision team that competes in local and state competitions. The squad has been invited to cheer at local high school ball games and to demonstrate their routines at special events. The training is rigorous but the rewards are huge. No experience is necessary. Any eligible person, with a desire to learn this fun sport, is invited to sign up and join the Buncombe County team.
There is no charge to the athletes to participate in Special Olympics. Since its
beginning in 1968, Special Olympics has maintained this policy as a means of assuring that all eligible athletes can compete. Athletes are encouraged to learn and participate in new sports. Special Olympic coaches are dedicated and love the sports they teach and the athletes they train.
