Volunteer Now for the Spring Litter Sweep

Spring is upon us and so is the biannual Spring Litter Sweep! Every year, the N.C. Department of Transportation hosts the litter removal initiative to engage the community in tackling roadside litter.

This year’s Spring Litter Sweep takes place April 13-27. During this time, residents are encouraged to participate in local efforts to clean up roads. We encourage individuals or groups to participate in this initiative.

To volunteer, contact Litter Management Coordinator David Hoskins at 828-803-6114 to select an available stretch of state-maintained highway and ask questions about the program. You can also reach out online through the Contact Us page.

Volunteers are provided with cleanup supplies, such as reversible orange/blue trash bags, gloves, and orange safety vests. For more information on local coordinators, visit this page.

“Thank you to all those who volunteer to help keep Buncombe beautiful and we encourage everyone who can to participate in this litter sweep event,” says Solid Waste Director Dane Pedersen.

During this time, NCDOT maintenance crews will devote one week of their time to pick up litter and collect orange bags placed on the roadsides by volunteer pickups.

If you find anything unusual or interesting during your litter sweep cleanup, use the hashtag, #StrangeLitter on social media as well as your cleanup photos at #LitterSweepNC.
