Rolling into Safety: Bike Safety Rodeo Fun

Buncombe County Parks & Recreation will be hosting their second-annual Bike Safety Rodeo in partnership with local emergency-service community partners on September 23 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Buncombe County Training Facility (20 Canoe Lane in Woodfin). This is a free, fun-filled family event dedicated to promoting bike and safety education in the community. The Bike Safety Rodeo is tailored to youth 5 to 15 years of age. 

Participants can look forward to an exciting array of fun activities aimed at setting them up with essential bike safety skills all while having a blast. Community partners such as the Woodfin Fire Department, AB Tech Emergency Services, Weaverville Fire Department, Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office, Asheville Police, WNC Safe Kids, and Daily Cycle Asheville will be on-site to provide engaging and educational activities for all attendees. This includes a bike skills course, helmet fittings, finger ID balloon crafts, fire truck water feature demonstration, KID ID kits and more!  

Participants are encouraged to bring their own bikes to fully participate in the event's bike skills course. For those without bikes, a limited number will be available for borrowing on-site.

By joining us at the Bike Safety Rodeo, we can work together to instill safe biking habits and promote awareness among children and youth,” says Lynn Pegg, Buncombe County Parks & Recreation Program Manager. 

Activities featured at the event include: 

Bike skills course 

KID ID kits to help ensure children's safety and security by providing identification materials. 

Fingerprint balloon crafts 

Ladder truck water feature demonstration, offering an exciting showcase of the local firefighting department's equipment and capabilities. (Bring your bathing suit)! 

Helmet fitting service, ensuring proper fitting and usage of helmets to enhance safety. 

Bike tips and demonstrations, showcasing best practices and useful tips for young bike riders. 

As an added bonus, the first 100 kids aged 5 to 15 years of age will receive free helmets to further promote bike safety in our community.
