Buncombe County Board of Commissioners Hear Staff Recommendation for Extension of Waste Pro Contract

Buncombe County Board of Commissioners Hear Staff Recommendation for Extension of Waste Pro Contract

At Tuesday’s Board of Commissioners meeting, the Board heard staff recommendations for an extension of the current Waste Pro contract, originally signed January 1, 2020.

The current Waste Pro contract is for five years with an option to extend for two, two-year extensions.  The contract includes the provision of services to include a subscription based weekly trash and recycling collection program in the unincorporated areas of Buncombe County. With the approval of this contract extension, the base term of the contract will now end on December 31, 2024.

There are currently 33,600 Waste Pro subscribers in Buncombe County. A community-wide survey conducted in late 2021 showed that 68% of survey respondents were very satisfied or satisfied with Waste Pro trash service.  Additionally, Buncombe County Solid Waste staff reviewed Waste Pro’s contract compliance as well as its activities and facilities and found that Waste Pro substantially complied with all terms, conditions, and provisions of the Franchise. The Environmental and Energy Stewardship Subcommittee also recommended an extension of the contract. Customers will not be impacted by this contract extension.

If the Board is in favor of extending the Franchise term, staff will take appropriate actions to work with Waste Pro to extend the Franchise for two additional terms of two years each. Next steps will include Board consideration of an ordinance that requires two majority votes of approval.
