There is still time to share your thoughts on what housing for low- and moderate-income families could look like on County-owned sites. Buncombe County’s Board of Commissioners are in the very early stages of working toward developing affordable housing on County-owned property and would like to hear ideas and thoughts from community members.Watch the video presentation and take our survey at engage.buncombecounty.org/affordablehousingdevelopment.
Background
In March 2023, following the results of an initial evaluation of several County-owned properties, the County Commissioners selected three sites to prioritize for affordable housing: 30-80 Valley Street, 50-52 Coxe Avenue, 180 Erwin Hills Road (portion).
“We want to understand the specific public interest at each site and within these neighborhoods. We hope the community will chime in to provide input, refine draft site priorities, and ultimately shape the potential projects,” says Cable.
The County has partnered with UNC School of Government’s Development Finance Initiative (DFI) to help meet the goal of working with qualified private developers to create at least 1,500 affordable rental units for low- and moderate-income households by 2030.
