Hey kids, it's time to get your rods and reels ready. Fishing crosses all gender, cultural, and economic lines. For some, it’s about catching the biggest fish, for others it’s the quantity. The adrenaline rush and pride when a line is pulled in is the same either way.
Buncombe County Parks & Recreation hosts its next kids fishing tournament at Lake Julian Park (37 Lake Julian Road in Arden) on Saturday, Sept. 17.
The tournament, named one of the Best Kids Fishing Tournaments in the U.S., is open to anyone 15 years old or younger. Competitors will be divided into age groups with prizes in each for Longest Fish, Shortest Fish, and Most Fish Caught. The grand prize for Longest Fish regardless of age is a kayak from Waterways and Feelfree Kayaks.
This is a catch and release tournament. After each fish has been measured, they will be released back into the lake. No fishing license is required for residents under 16 years old. No boat fishing is allowed by competitors. All competitors must be accompanied by an adult. Pre-registration is recommended.
“Fishing builds confidence, improves coordination, teaches patience, and encourages an appreciation of nature,” said Mac Stanley, Outdoors Coordinator for Buncombe County Parks & Recreation. “This tournament is a great way to introduce our younger residents to healthier lifestyles and decrease screen time – at least for a little while.”
On-site registration begins at 8 a.m. Fishing begins at 8:30 a.m., and ends promptly at 11:30 a.m. Prizes will be awarded at measuring table between 11:30 a.m.-noon. Your $10 registration includes a bucket, bait, and breakfast snacks but competitors must bring their own poles. This is a competition for kids and youth. Parents are allowed to help younger kids cast their poles. In the spirit of sportsmanship, any competitor receiving excessive assistance from an adult will be disqualified.
