Board of Commissioners Extend Double-Time Pay for 911 Overtime Shifts

At its June 21 regular meeting, the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners voted to extend double-time pay for 911 overtime shifts through Sept. 30, 2022. The extension is just one strategy to address staffing challenges in the 911 call center.

“With our current double-time program, we’ve covered 145 shifts equating to 1,735 hours,” said Director of Strategy and Innovation Rafael Baptista.

The 911 call center currently has 22 vacant positions and is understaffed by 31 percent. Eleven of those vacant positions are assigned to support City of Asheville dispatch. In January, 2022, Buncombe County and the City of Asheville consolidated 911 operations.
