Game On: Commissioners Move Forward with Enka Recreation Destination Upgrades

The Enka Recreation Destination is a step closer toward completing improvements as Buncombe County Commissioners approved $735,000 for the installation of upgraded ball fields during their meeting on March 1. The new fields will feature AstroTurf and are one of the last additions to the $12 million dollar upgrade project that includes sports lighting, two miles of greenway, a dog park, and other infrastructure improvements. The funding will also help build about 60 additional parking lots and install fencing around soccer fields.

While various grant sources are covering the majority of the Enka Recreation Destination upgrades, cost increases are making the planning and installation of the AstroTurf fields higher than the original estimate from 2018. The AstroTurf fields are scheduled to be complete by Fall of this year.

The Enka Recreation Destination is extremely popular among locals using its multiple walking areas, challenge course, sports fields, and other amenities. It also continues to boost its profile as an attractive location for regional sports tournaments that generate significant out-of-town spending for the local economy.
