Ferry Road Project Update: Commissioners Eye Affordable Housing, Conservation

With a focus on creating more housing opportunities in conjunction with environmental stewardship, the Board of Commissioners is moving forward with plans to develop land on Ferry Road in South Asheville. On Sept. 21, Commissioners approved the move into phase two of the study of the 137-acre tract of land located adjacent to the French Broad River and Pisgah National Forest. “This property represents an opportunity to deliver on community needs while making a significant impact on the affordable housing crisis,” exclaimed Commission Chair Brownie Newman. “It’s also a chance to hit on our strategic priorities of conservation by creating recreation amenities as well.”

The overall goal is to create mixed-use, mixed-income housing while preserving as much of the land as possible using sustainability principles. The Buncombe County 2025 Strategic Plan emphasizes environmental stewardship, and each of the development concepts features preservation of acreage and the use of additional land tabbed for parks, trails, and other conservation measures.

In addition to environmental stewardship and housing, Commissioners also expressed interest in utilization of the site for a potential early childhood center, health care facilities, and other public-serving amenities that are beneficial for communities. Commissioners noted the Ferry Road project is a chance to set an example for how development can look in Buncombe County and be a place that gives people a sense of pride.
