BorgWarner to Invest $62M in Buncombe County Expansion, Focus on Renewable Energies

In a move that will expand its current operations in Arden, BorgWarner announced a $62,000,000 investment that will enhance the plant’s capabilities for the design, development, and production of vehicle turbomachinery, thermal management, and emissions control systems. On March 2, the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a one-time economic incentive of $460,000 for the expansion pending BorgWarner meets investment and job retention requirements. This investment by BorgWarner enables the Arden product development team to continue its work developing leading-edge technologies for battery and fuel-cell electric vehicles. BorgWarner will continue to test these new products for electrified vehicles and work with its customers to bring these technologies to market alongside its existing product portfolio.

Chairman Brownie Newman credited the collaboration of County staff and the Economic Development Coalition for Asheville-Buncombe County for helping secure the expansion. “I appreciate the great work [BorgWarner] has done for many years,” noted Newman of the company’s manufacturing operations in Western North Carolina dating back to 1975.

BorgWarner says the jobs will provide an average wage of $51,600 annually, a rate that supports the County’s 2025 Strategic Plan of increasing average wages. For more information on BorgWarner’s Arden facility and the economic incentives, click here.
