Jabil Company Brings 68 New Jobs to Buncombe

From Asheville Chamber and Economic Development Coalition for Asheville-Buncombe County

Asheville, N.C. – In conjunction with the Buncombe County Commission and the Economic Development Coalition for Asheville-Buncombe County (EDC), Nypro, a Jabil Company, today announced plans to invest $18.5 million in its Asheville operations. The investments in expanding facilities, new technology, machinery and equipment will require the addition of 68 new positions to its current workforce of 325.  The new positions will include opportunities in engineering, production, quality control, and management.

Nypro has been a leader in precision plastic products for the healthcare market since 1955. Jabil (NYSE: JBL), a manufacturing solutions provider that delivers comprehensive design, manufacturing, supply chain and product management services for a variety of industries, acquired Nypro in 2013. Headquartered in St. Petersburg, Florida, Jabil operates in over 100 sites around the world, with two North Carolina facilities in Mebane and Asheville.

The Asheville site, located in Vista Industrial Park in Arden, specializes in manufactured precision plastic products such as insulin pens and asthma inhalers for customers in the healthcare industry. Jabil plans to expand production capacity in 2020.

The Asheville site leadership attributes the expansion initiative to a growing market demand for pharmaceutical delivery devices and a competitive advantage of the Asheville workforce with demonstrated expertise in technical injection molding and assembly.

“We are very pleased to continue expanding our operations in Asheville, North Carolina,” said Jim Cormas, general manager of the Asheville facility. “Jabil helps customers harness innovation and technology to solve complex challenges and the Asheville team has helped build that reputation for creativity and technical excellence.”

“Together, Nypro and Jabil have a 20-year legacy as a leading employer in Buncombe County and we applaud their continued investment in technology, innovation and people,” Chairman of the Buncombe County Board of Commissioners Brownie Newman said.  “This significant investment will create many good paying jobs and strengthen the county’s tax base, helping fund the services and infrastructure critical to the quality of life in our community.”

“Investment in high-growth technology companies, like Jabil, is key to the sustained economic growth of Western North Carolina,” stated EDC Board Chairman Michael Meguiar. “Our ability to support these industries will build a strong foundation for this and future generations.”

Partners in the expansion include Buncombe County and the Economic Development Coalition for Asheville-Buncombe County and the North Carolina Community College System.
