County Files Lawsuit to Recover Money Tied to Equestrian Center, Removes Former Commissioner's Name From 35 Woodfin St.

The Buncombe County Board of Commissioners is filing a lawsuit against former County Manager Wanda Greene and former Commissioner Ellen Frost. During its meeting on Dec. 17, the Board heard an update from outside counsel Ron Payne about efforts to recover money in connection with the World Equestrian Center in Tryon.

This lawsuit is separate from previous lawsuits that have already recouped more than $3.2 million. The current lawsuit will be filed in North Carolina Superior Court. More details will be available as it progresses through the court system.

Payne also advised Commissioners of new allegations against a former Commissioner. “In conjunction with the [Joe] Wiseman matter, a deposition of Jon Creighton was taken, and during the course of the deposition he said that a former Commissioner had received things of value from Wiseman or his employer,” Payne told the Board. Commissioners then voted unanimously to remove Stanley’s name from 35 Woodfin St.

Payne said after consulting an attorney representing Stanley, his family issued a statement that the former Commissioner is “Unable to confirm or deny allegations concerning his tenure on the Board… but respects the work and investigation” and “accepts and understands” the removal of his name.

Crews are expected to begin work on the removal of Stanley’s name immediately.
