The mission of the School Garden Grants program is to provide monetary grants and support to public schools in Buncombe County that integrate gardening principles into the curriculum. Some studies have shown that when children have contact with soil during activities like digging and planting, they have improved moods, better learning experiences and decreased anxiety. Since 2007 Extension Master GardenerSM Volunteers have awarded 44 School Garden Grants totaling over $24,000. Records show these grants have involved more than 12,500 students and hundreds of teachers, parents, and community volunteers.
