African American Education in Buncombe County
Dr. Darin Waters is an Assistant Professor of History & Special Assistant to the Chancellor at UNC-Asheville where he teaches courses in American history, North Carolina History, Appalachian History, African American and Brazilian History. He also specializes in the history of race relations in both the United States and Latin America.
The Wage Gap and Wealth Disparities in Buncombe County
Commissioner Al Whitesides is recognized throughout Asheville as a successful businessman, a community leader and a living touchstone to the city's struggle to eliminate segregation. The long-time community activist and former banker is the first African-American to serve as a commissioner for Buncombe County.
Access and Availability of Healthcare for African Americans
Sharon West is the Women Veterans Program Manager at the Department of Veterans Affairs. She is also a consultant at Four Seasons Hospice, adjunct faculty for the BSN Program and Transcultural Nursing at Mars Hill University, and a member of the NC Public Health Commission.
Marcell Proctor also held a lunch and learn on the historical effects of redlining and gentrification on the African Amerian Community in Buncombe County. However, there were technical difficulties while filming so no video is available for that presentation.
This Lunch & Learn series was created by the Community Engagement Team and focuses on the history of African Americans in Buncombe County. This developed from a community request to help preserve this information. The purpose is two-fold: 1) to capture the historical perspectives of older African Americans in our community & 2) to use that perspective to help inform and inspire current efforts to revitalize the Black community.
