Have you been cheering on local American Idol contestant Caleb Johnson? His success is especially near and dear to Buncombe County Employees since his father, David Johnson, works for our Parks and Recreation Department at the Zeugner Recreation Center!
David says, “Caleb attended Erwin High School and when he was a senior he came home one day and said a classmate had asked him to be in the school talent show. Caleb went to his friend’s house several times to practice, and I didn’t know what they were working on. The day of the talent show, me and his mom were sitting in the audience, Caleb came out on stage and they handed him the microphone. He started to sing and nothing came out… the mic was turned off. As soon as the mic was turned on and his voice sang out, the students and crowd went wild! I said to Principal Birchfield, I didn’t even know he could sing!” Mr. Burchfield said “He’ll be on TV one day.”
After his senior year, Caleb’s mother helped him locate a band who was looking for a lead singer. He went to an audition in Maggie Valley and got the gig, and he’s been singing ever since.
David would like to thank everyone for all the support, and remind us that this week is the crucial vote for Caleb to make it to the final three. Don't forget - you can vote up to 200 times using all the forms of technology and media allowed.
A parade and a free concert?
Wednesday, May 7, the remaining four contestants compete to be the top three finalists. The top three receive a trip to their hometown, where a parade and a free concert are usually on the agenda.
If Caleb makes the cut, the celebration in Asheville will probably be the weekend of May 9 - 11.
Stay tuned and VOTE! The next "American Idol" live performance airs on Wednesday, May 7 from 8-10 p.m., with the results announced on the show, Thursday, May 8 at 9 p.m.
