Get Comfy, and Settle In With a Great Book, Album, DVD, and More at the Swannanoa Library

There’s something about settling in with a great book, album, movie that just makes the rest of the world disappear. The Swannanoa Library is keenly aware that an essential element to escaping into your choice of media is the surrounding environment. “People love how cozy our branch is,” exclaims Branch Manager Carla Hollar. “Since taking over as manager, I have worked to make it homier. We have comfortable chairs meant for conversation and studying and, for the most part, a quieter atmosphere than more urban branches.”

And audiophiles rejoice! The Swannanoa Library touts quite the sonic landscape. “We have a big, varied collection of music here, more than several larger branches. We carry local music, the latest, and the best,” explains Hollar, noting the DVD collection rivals streaming services. “Recently, a patron took a look at her Netflix queue and discovered that out of 20 items she wanted to see, all but two were available either here, or within the system.”

Of course, equal attention is paid to traditional resources, and there is a focus on making sure children have the exceptional resources and equally exciting environment to enrich their time. There’s an entryway mural dedicated to beloved and notable characters and even a children’s reading nook that’s perfect for letting their imaginations run wild. “We also have a child-centric computer with several learning games, a large, colorful touch screen, and a child-sized desk,” says Hollar.

From babies to adults, the Swannanoa Library’s programming has something for everyone, such as:

  • Story time for toddlers every Thursday, 10:30-11:15 a.m.
  • Story time for preschoolers every Thursday, 11-11:45 a.m.
  • LEGO Builders every Thursday, 4-5 p.m.
  • Swannanoa Book Club, every sixth week on Thursday, 6 p.m.
  • And check the events calendar for up-to-date information about events.

As if all that wasn’t enough to get you to the Swannanoa Library, it also has the County’s second largest, perpetual book sale that takes up the entire basement floor. And with an adjacent park, playground, walking path, and other amenities; it’s the perfect place to take in some quality outdoor time (and perhaps let the little ones burn off some steam). So let the wild rumpus begin!
