Due to feedback from the public, on  Nov. 5, 2019, the Board of Commissioners approved amendments to the Waste Pro contract that will take effect on Jan. 1, 2020. Read more about those changes here. 

Here's What You Need to Know

The cart selection website is still open due to the concerns we've heard from you. Waste Pro will be issuing a robo-call to all subscribers over the next weeks, letting customers know about the bear-resistant cart lease option. You will not need to do anything if you are happy with your cart choice, but if you would like to lease a bear-resistant cart for an additional $9.50 per month, click here to change your choice. 

If you are unable to bring your trash cart to the curb due to the distance of your driveway, medical condition, and no able bodied individual lives within your household, please contact Waste Pro at 828-585-5074 to
inquire about discounts to Waste Pro’s premium service.

Note: Due to these contract changes, Waste Pro will not start cart delivery until December. Stay tuned for more information.

Why Waste Pro? Why Roll-out carts?

In 2020, Buncombe County’s service contract with Waste Pro was set to expire. A nationwide request for bids was issued for waste disposal services earlier this year. Waste Pro was the only provider that met the County’s needs and was awarded the contract in June.

The new service price is $19.21 per month and includes two durable roll-out carts for trash and recycling, weekly trash collection, and every-other-week recycling collection.

Cart systems are economical, environmentally friendly, and offer many benefits for subscribers and the community:

•  Carts keep trash secure, reduce odor, and help minimize pests.
• Carts help keep our streets and neighborhoods clean.
• Automated collection speeds up service by reducing handling time.
• Customers can place recyclables directly into the recycling cart, eliminating the need to purchase blue bags.
• Carts reduce plastic bag contamination in the recycling process improving the value of our recyclables.

The new cart system was chosen for the substantial benefits and value to residents, neighborhoods, and our community. If we didn’t move to the roll-out cart system, costs for residents would have been more than $20 per month.

FAQs

Q. What other options do I have outside of Waste Pro?

A. You can bring trash and recyclables to the landfill or transfer station.

Solid Waste disposal fees:

• 33-gallon bags of household waste with recyclables removed:
• $2/bag
• Less than 33-gallon bags:
• $1/bag
• There is no charge for recycling.

Q. What is my service going to cost? Do I have to pay for these carts?

A. The monthly service fee for Waste Pro’s basic service is $19.21 per month, this includes your roll-out carts, weekly trash collection, and every other week recycling collection. This comes to $57.63/quarter. Waste Pro does offer other levels of service please call (828) 585-5074 for more information.

Q. Do I have to use these carts?

A. Yes, per the County's contract, you have to have a Waste Pro cart for Waste Pro to pick up your trash. Also, bag pick up will end in January 2020.

Q. Will I be charged if I don't make a selection?

A. No, if you do not make a selection, you will receive the 96-gallon cart size. You will receive two 96 gallon carts, one for trash and one for recycling. A change fee may apply to change sizes after cart delivery.

Q. Are there options for bear-proof containers?

A. Waste Pro does offer bear-proof carts. Please call (828) 585-5074 for more information.

Q. Can I put plastic bags in my trash cart?

A. Yes, plastic bags go in your trash cart. Plastic bags do not go in your recycling cart.

Q. What happens if Waste Pro misses my scheduled pick-up?

Q.  I live in Black Mountain does this affect me?

A. The Town of Black Mountain has a separate contract with Waste Pro, please contact the Town of Black Mountain if you have questions regarding that contract.

Q. What is there is no one physically able(e.g., handicapped individuals) in my household to move the trash carts to the collection point?

A. Waste Pro offers Back Door Service: "Back Door Service is a service that Contractor will provide at no extra cost to handicapped individuals provided they show proof with a doctor’s note and verification that no able-bodied persons reside at the residence requesting such service."
