20th Anniversary Celebration of Enka-Candler Library - TODAY

Books arranged in a heart shape

Friday, September 15 we will have a day-long celebration of two decades in this location (1404 Sand Hill Road). Friday, September 15, 1997, is when it all began.

Attendees will enjoy 20th anniversary cake, reminiscing, and some surprises. We invite everyone to stop by for refreshments and share some memories as we celebrate our first 20 years and look with anticipation to the future. For more information, call 250-4758.

The Enka-Candler Branch Library is fortunate to have an active, vibrant Friends group. At the monthly meetings, there is always worthwhile business transacted and money spent because we Friends – all 85 of us - love our branch.

Children’s/family programming is a huge focus of our efforts, and the Enka-Candler Branch has been a pioneer in offering Spanish story time, Lego Club, Cosplay Club, and the newest addition, a craft corner.

Summer Reading requires the biggest outlay of money, but we feel it benefits our community more than any other program by providing an early and hopefully life-long love of books. This year we involved adults in Summer Reading with a BINGO game which proved popular.

We host several adult programs each year, from Cooking with Herbs to Save the Enka Jet to Raising Chickens to a program about Cataloochee.

To provide the money for our many commitments to the library, we host spring and fall BIG book sales and have an ongoing sale of paperback and hard back novels. We support Chautauqua. We support our fine staff with treats during holidays and lunch on Library Staff Appreciation Day. We support the extras that the county does not provide - furniture, book marks, baby bags and first library card bags, as well as buying supplemental books and periodicals.

We do a lot for our community in a very small space. Therefore, we are all looking forward to the year 2020 when there is money in the county budget for the Enka-Candler Branch to expand into a county-owned space next door which will double the library’s size. Thus, we are focused on future needs while providing for the here and now.

Our next BIG book sale will be Friday, October 6 and Saturday, October 7 during normal business hours. We appreciate your support.
