On Feb. 17, the Scholastic Art Awards for the Western North Carolina region announced its winners. The art was submitted from students in grades 7-12, and there were 550 entries from across 20 counties. District 2 Commissioner Amanda Edwards was on hand to deliver remarks at the event. “We are most grateful to our art teachers in Western North Carolina. They encourage students to express themselves, to endeavor to make the best work possible, and to develop skills that will carry them successfully throughout their lives,” noted Edwards. “To each of the students… You are being congratulated for achieving the highest levels of artistic excellence in our region, and some of you may go on to recognition at the National Scholastic Art Awards.”

More than 130 works of student art were displayed at the event. The students' art will be on display Feb. 4-March 12, 2019 at the Mission Health/A-B Tech Conference Center located at 16 Fernihurst Drive. Buncombe County wants to congratulate everyone who participated in the Scholastic Art Awards, and we would like to with the Gold Key winners best of luck at Nationals in New York City.
