A new federal law means changes to how you will fly and visit federal buildings. Starting in 2020, the rules for air travel and entering federal facilities is changing. Obtaining an N.C. Real Id is not mandatory, but if you don’t have one you’ll need secondary identification to board a plane or visit federal buildings including military installations.
Here’s what you need to know about getting your N.C. Real ID:
- You must obtain it at the DMV. You can’t just get an N.C. Real ID by renewing online. However, once you have an N.C. Real ID it can be renewed online.
- You can make an appointment so you don’t have to wait in line. To do so call (919) 715-7000.
- N.C. Real IDs are available as driver licenses, learner’s permits, and ID cards.
- Costs are the same as standard duplicates and renewals.
- You will need to provide proof of identity, date of birth, citizenship, address, and Social Security number. If your name has changed and is different than on your birth certificate, passport, or other government documents you will need to show a marriage license, divorce certificate, or other documentation from the Register of Deeds.
