The Black Mountain Library is presenting a literary series Power in the Word. The series will begin in January and feature both written and spoken word.
The purpose of this new series is to celebrate emerging and established authors; to foster a literary arts community in Black Mountain; to raise funds for The Friends of the Black Mountain Library; to provide a forum to share events for the public; and to inspire and educate through the richness of the written word.
The program schedule for Power in the Word is below. Our first program, The Power or Poetry, will be Saturday, January 25 at 3:30pm and a reception will follow.

The Magic of Poetry: Dr. Tony Abbott
Saturday, January 25 from 3:30-6:30pm
Winner of the 2015 NC Award for Literature from the State of NC, Anthony S. Abbott is an author of seven books of poetry, two novels, and four books of literary criticism. He will discuss poetry and read excerpts from The Angel Dialogues. Reception following.
Storytelling: Larry Pearlman
Saturday, March 28 from 11am-5pm, performance at 7pm
Actor and storyteller Larry Pearlman will lead a workshop entitled “Learning to Tell Your Story” from 11:00-5:00; this will be followed by an evening performance at 7pm featuring workshop participants.
Storytelling Through Collage: Stephanie Sipp
Sunday, March 29 from 1-5pm
Illustrator, artist, and author, Stephanie Sipp will use the theme “Renewal” to teach storytelling through the art of collage. Beginners welcome. Space is limited to 15. Materials fee $20. Register at the library or online through the Events Calendar. (Scholarships may be available; contact the Black Mountain Library for details.)
Documentary Screening: The Mountain Minor
Friday, April 17 at 7pm
The White Horse Black Mountain will screen the documentary, The Mountain Minor, which explores Appalachian culture through music. Purchase tickets at whitehorseblackmountain.com. This is a fundraiser for the Friends of the Black Mountain Library; tickets are $6 student, $12 in advance, $15 at the door.
Appalachian Hollering and Ballads
Saturday, April 18 from 3-5pm
Saro Lynch-Thomason, folklorist and singer, will bring Appalachian history to life through old farm calls and ballads. An Old Fashioned Ice Cream Social follows her performance. (Dairy-free options available, provided by The Hop Ice Cream.)
CC Tillery Author Event
Sunday, April 19 from 3-5pm
CC Tillery is the pseudonym for two sisters who co-wrote the story of their great aunt, Bessie Daniels Elliott in the Appalachian Journey series and have written other Appalachian works.
