Oil paintings, handcrafted quilts, pottery, and jewelry in several different media will be on display at the Leicester Library throughout the month of July. If you have antique photographs, blueprints, directories, and other ephemera portraying the people and past of Fairview, bring them to the library during our Scan Day Open House to have them preserved and shared with the community and generations to come. We will professionally scan and return your items while you wait, and the digital copies will be archived in the Buncombe County Public Library North Carolina Collection.
Please be prepared to provide as much information as possible about each photograph: names, dates, locations, etc.
We will be staffed to scan a small number of photos from each contributor at our open houses.
Any larger quantity collections (15 items or more) can be handled by appointment only. Please contact the library via phone or email, and we will be happy to accommodate you.

After the hot licks of The Jordan Okrend Experience (vintage pop imbued with an infectious funky edge), great catered food (it's TACO TUESDAY!) and a half price book sale, see the system's own Fire Dancer Lulu perform in Grovemont Park. The performance starts at dusk, around 8 p.m. This event is free, but Groovin' on Grovemont is a fundraiser for our library and the Swannanoa Community Council, so donations are accepted with gratitude.
Silent Film Night at the Weaverville Library: The Kid Brother with Harold Lloyd

Join us for free showing of “The Kid Brother” starring Harold Lloyd. This 1927 film was Lloyd’s favorite among all of his feature length movies, it’s the story of a sheriff's milquetoast son who has a chance to prove himself when a medicine show run by con artists comes into town. Harold plays the youngest of three brothers. The other two are big and strong while he is the weakling who proves in the end that brains are better than brawn. Join us on Tuesday, July 10th at 6pm for the third of four free film screenings and discussions on the highly influential Film Noir genre. Events are hosted by North Carolina Film Critics Association member James Rosario, who will introduce each film.
Humphrey Bogart, Mary Astor, Sydney Greenstreet, and Peter Lorre star in John Huston’s Noir classic, based on the novel by Dashiell Hammett. Private detective Sam Spade (Bogart) finds himself pursued by dangerous criminals (Lorre and Greenstreet) after taking on a secretive new client (Astor). A valuable statuette is missing, with each party desperate to find it. The stakes are high as the web of crime and conspiracy is revealed. Who will claim the Maltese Falcon?
This film is not rated and has a run time of 1 hour and 40 minutes.

Based on Yann Martel's best-selling novel, this coming-of-age tale recounts the adventures of Pi, an Indian boy who is the sole survivor of a shipwreck. Pi finds himself on a lifeboat with only some zoo animals for company. This program is free and the public is invited.

Musician Marq-Paul will be performing at North Asheville Library on Friday, July 20 at 6 p.m.
Marq-Paul is an instrumental guitarist in the style of Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Eric Johnson and Paul Gilbert. Marq-Paul melds many styles of music into a web of compositions, blending music from Latin swing to drum & bass to arena rock to the avant garde. He is always trying to push the limits of what can be done in instrumental music while bringing a good show to his audiences.
As a result of his efforts, Marq-Paul was recognized and was a finalist for the “Instrumental Artist of the Year” Momentum Award 2008, “Rock Artist of the Year” Momentum Award, 2009 CIA Alliance, and also as a store finalist for Guitar Center’s “King of the Blues” competition.
This show is free, requires no tickets, and will be held outdoors. All ages welcome. No alcohol allowed. Rain location in the library community room.

Join us for an evening with children’s book editor, Joy Neaves. Explore elements that make up great stories and learn ways to get your own story ideas onto the page. We’ll look at strategies for developing strong characters, engaging action, and compelling ideas. Learn how using a storyboard can help you develop the framework for a picture book text or a longer work of fiction.
Joy Neaves is a freelance editor of children's books at namelos who gained experience as an editor of children’s picture books, poetry, middle grade, and young adult fiction at Front Street Books, an award-winning imprint of books for children. Joy is passionate in her approach to talking about both children’s literature and the craft of writing for children, and enjoys helping writers hone their craft, with an eye toward publication. Bring a garment to repair, embellish, alter! ALL materials supplied. This workshop will provide a space to repair, or re-work a chosen garment, and gain "tool takeaways" for use in participant's own lives/application. The instructor will help establish repair plans with participants to suit their practical needs and aesthetic desires, with the hope that these tools will increase the longevity of our garments we love and curb the consumption of more articles of clothing!
