With more than 119,000 voters, the 2018 interim elections was a record-breaking day for Buncombe County Election Services. An election of this size takes a significant amount of preparation, community partnerships, and culminates with a very long day for election staff and poll workers. However, looking toward 2020, Election Services is preparing for an even bigger day at the polls and is looking for help from the community to make it happen. “We’re expecting huge turnouts and looking for early voting locations that are also huge,” said Trena Velez, Director of County Election Services. “So, if you have a facility that might lend itself well to that, give us a shout.”
Velez is also looking for the technological savvy and energy of college students to be poll workers. These positions are no longer volunteer-based and are paid. She also wants teachers to facilitate tours for their students of election services to invigorate them about this important civic process.
