Rock the Dock at Lake Julian on May 4

The community is invited to Play LOCAL at the dedication of a new dock with a full day of outdoor fun throughout Lake Julian Park on May 4 beginning at 8:00 a.m. Activities include a ribbon cutting with comments from county officials at 11 a.m., as well as free fishing, Green Built Alliance’s Spring Disc Golf Tournament, and Asheville Sailing Club’s Jet-14 regatta taking place throughout the day. Buncombe County Recreation Services is celebrating Lake Julian Park’s 55th anniversary with a series of enhancements including a new playground, improvements to picnic pavilions, and other exciting changes. The park is located on 406 Overlook Road Extension in Arden, North Carolina.

“This new dock represents Buncombe County’s commitment to improve the quality of life for neighbors and residents,” said Josh O’Conner, Director of Buncombe County Recreation Services. “Lake Julian Park is one of our greatest public assets with year-round fishing, trails, picnic areas, volleyball and horse shoes, paddle boats and water trikes, one of the best disc golf courses in the region, and a new accessible playground installed last summer. As our county continues to grow, preservation of public spaces for social interaction, active lifestyles, and additional community capital is a top priority for the Recreation Services team and our County Commissioners.”

The new eco-friendly, accessible dock was installed by Shoco Marine and replaces an outdated structure estimated to be around 40 years old. The new dock’s versatile modular design has been constructed to form a modern, weather-resilient, durable multi-slip marina. As Lake Julian transitions from a thermal cooling lake, the ability of the new dock to survive freeze conditions and changing water levels will be imperative to provide safe access. Additional slips may also be added easily in the future.

A short dedication ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. in which officials will christen the new dock located on Lake Julian Road (the main loop of Lake Julian Park accessed from 406 Overlook Road). Asheville Sailing Club’s Jet-14 demonstrations and regatta race begin at 1 p.m. and can be viewed from the same general area. Green Built Alliance’s disc golf tournament begins at noon on the Fisherman’s Trail side of the park, accessed from 2181 Hendersonville Road. Buncombe County Recreation Services will also waive the local fishing fee on May 4, so anglers can fish from the shore or private fishing boats for free all day. Please note, a North Carolina fishing license is still required.

Visitors to the park are welcome to bring a lunch. Uncovered picnic tables and grills are available on a first-come basis. Larger covered picnic pavilions are available for rent by calling (828) 684-0376. Wild Wing Café has also provided coupons for attendees and can be accessed by a paved lakeside greenway from the park.
