From local authors to local history, the Buncombe County Public Library System is a fantastic resource for more than just books. Check out the many great activities for all ages and interests at our branch locations in March.

Blind Date with a Book at the Leicester Library

Don't judge a book by its cover. Throughout March, come in to the Leicester Library and choose a wrapped book to read, based only on a written description (not its cover.) When you're done, rate the book. This is a great way to find new favorite authors! And you’ll be entered in a drawing to win 10 free books from our lobby book sale.

Poetry Alive!

Whether you love poetry or don’t really “get” poetry, this is the poetry show for you. Asheville’s own Poetry Alive! presents poetry with a twist. Returning to the bardic tradition of long ago, two actors memorize hundreds of classic, popular and contemporary poetry and perform poems like you’ve never seen them before. This event is free and open to all ages. Don’t miss it!

Art After Dark: Painting Fun on Canvas

The Skyland/South Buncombe Friends of the Library will have a book sale on: Friday, March 9; Saturday, March 10; and Monday, March 12 from 10 am - 4 pm.

There will be a Friends Preview on Friday from 10 - 11 am, and a bag sale on Monday from 2-4 pm. All proceeds benefit the library.

In honor of Women's History Month we're reading: "Hidden Figures: The Untold True Story of four African-American Women who Helped Launched our Nation into Space" by Margot Lee Shetterly. The Friends of Fairview Library will present accomplished astronomer and astro-photographer Bill Lynch on Tuesday March 13 at 7pm at the library.  Bill will take us on a tour from the edge of our galaxy to nearby planets and moons before leading us on a journey out to the nebulae in our Milky Way and beyond.  Bill captures his professional images from his Fairview observatory.  As an additional treat we’ll see his photos from last August of the total lunar eclipse.  Bill was in the zone of totality in South Carolina where the weather was clear.

TEEN Pi Day Pie Party with BAKED Pie Company

Slap on an apron and grab your rolling pin.  It’s Pi Day! Expert bakers from BAKED Pie Company are coming to Pack Library to teach us the secrets of making exceptional pie crust. Participants will make and take their own pie, ready to be baked at home.  Ages 11-18 (not for younger kids, sharp utensils in use). Educators from the Asheville Art Museum will visit the second Wednesday of every month to teach different aspects of art and provide an art activity. Kids learn about art and also make something cool to bring home. For school-aged kids.

As part of Asheville's "Celebrate Zelda!" festivities, Pack Library will host Dr. Daniel Johnson, MD presenting: "Highland Hospital- Practices, Treatment, and Mental Health." This will be a presentation on the psychiatric practices that took place at Highland Hospital during Zelda Fitzgerald’s era. Everyone is welcome to attend this free program which is appropriate for teens and adults.

Join us for an Irish movie on St. Patrick’s Day!  We’ll have a free moving screening in our auditorium of "The Secret of Roan Inish." Based on the novel “Secret of the Ron Mor Skerry” by Rosalie K. Fry.

This magical realism film directed by John Sayles is centered on the Irish and Orcadian folklores of selkies, seals that can shed their skins to become human. The story, set on the west coast of Ireland, is about Fiona, a young girl who is sent to live with her grandparents near the island of Roan Inish, where the selkies are rumored to reside. (IMDB)
