Volunteers Needed to Support Buncombe Foster Care System

Children have no control over the decisions that are made for them by adults yet these decisions have significant impacts on their lives. Community Resource Volunteers are able to provide a neutral perspective to other meeting participants focusing on the “big picture” and making case recommendations from a broader perspective.

BCHHS is in need of Community Resource Volunteers to participate in Permanency Planning Review (PPR) Meetings, which are meetings involving social workers, Guardian ad Litems, families, foster parents and foster children, where permanency options, placement decisions, well-being issues and safety planning are discussed.

These meetings last approximately two hours and volunteers are able to sign up each month for the meetings they are able to cover based on their availability. We hear from parents that they appreciated the support of the social worker while they worked to overcome the issues that were keeping them from being the best parent that they could be. As a community volunteer, you have the same opportunity to support children and parents.

An initial, one-time 3-hour training is required to educate volunteers on the overall child welfare process and to ensure that volunteers are aware of their role on the Permanency Planning Review Team including the strict need for confidentiality.

Click Community Volunteer to register for volunteer training on October 30, 2018 from 1 – 4 pm. You can also contact us by phone at (828) 250-5843 or by email at socialwork@buncombecounty.org.

Please visit the Buncombe County Social Work Services page for more information on BCHHS Social Work Services. We would love to talk with you more about this option.
