A recent collaboration between Buncombe County Recreation Services and Eddie Smith’s Woodworking classes at Enka High School expands book access throughout Buncombe County at public parks. Students spent the last few weeks designing and building Little Free Library structures that are being installed in the community.
“We know that parks are more than open spaces, soccer fields, and playgrounds,” said Peyton O’Conner, Director of Recreation Services. “They are often the heartbeat of communities, gathering spots to connect with neighbors to preserve culture and enhance the quality of life. Expanding the Little Free Library book-sharing network throughout the county will inspire readers of all ages and spread the joy of reading. We are in the community-building business, so this partnership with Enka High students was a natural collaboration.”
You can help decide where to place the new weather-resistant, low-maintenance library boxes. Some have been installed at Buncombe County Sports Park, Charles D. Owen Park, Hominy Creek River Park, Hominy Valley Recreation Park, Karpen Soccer Fields, Lake Julian Park, and North Buncombe Sports Complex.
