Community Update: 100% Renewable Energy Initiative & Climate Resilience Resources

In the past two years Buncombe County and the City of Asheville have both adopted renewable energy goals. The County and City have committed to transition all government operations from fossil-fueled energy (coal, natural gas, propane, gasoline, etc.) to renewable energy (solar, wind, etc.) by 2030. The County also has a goal to transition all of Buncombe County, including the City of Asheville, to 100 percent renewable energy by 2042.

Both organizations have partnered to engage a consultant to develop a roadmap to implement these goals. The Cadmus Group has been working to gather information from multiple sources, including a citizen survey and community meetings, to help determine a plan of action to achieve these important goals. Draft findings of the City/County roadmap to renewable energy will be presented at a Community Update June 19, at The Collider, at 1 Haywood St., fourth floor, from 5-7 p.m. Buncombe County’s Sustainability Officer will be on hand with the Cadmus Group to provide information and answer questions.

The event is free and everyone is encouraged to attend. Refreshments will be served. While free, please fill out this RSVP for planning purposes.

Climate Resilience Resource Guide

The City of Asheville’s Office of Sustainability and the Sustainability Advisory Committee on Energy and the Environment (SACEE) will share information on how we can become better prepared and more resilient to the effects of climate change as a community and individually.

The City of Asheville’s Office of Sustainability worked with UNC Asheville's National Environmental Modeling and Analysis Center(NEMAC) to craft a publication that contains specific actionable steps we can take to mitigate impacts from climate events that affect our residents most frequently, such flooding, landslides, and forest fires. The event will feature the release of Building a Climate-Resilient Asheville — Personal Action Guide.
