Just Try It: Learn a Language, Play a Sport, and Take a Hike in March

In like a lion, out like a lamb has always seemed straightforward: when March starts, it’s still winter; by the end of the month, it’s spring. Buncombe County’s weather has definitely delivered on the former promise as we’ve seen some of the coldest, wettest days of winter over the beginning of March. There are still plenty of ways to stay active, discover a new hobby, or stimulate your mind indoors and outdoors during this schizophrenic month.

Here are our "Just Try It" ideas for March. (If you missed it, check out February’s list.) Each month, we’ll suggest different activities. “Just Try It” and let us know how it turned out by tagging @BuncombeRecreation on Instagram or Facebook and using the hashtag #JustTryItBuncombe

  • Week #10 (March 4-10) – Your Buncombe County Library card grants you access to a world beyond the 13 local branches. Access learning resources, research tools, and historic archives using the free online Virtual Library. March is National Foreign Language Month and your library card grants access to over 70 world language courses through Mango Languages using self-paced exercises that stress four key components – vocabulary, pronunciation, grammar, and culture – for free from your laptop, tablet, or phone.
  • Week #11 (March 11-17) – Do you still remember the sound of your foot meeting the red rubber ball on the schoolyard? Kick up your fun and fitness by recruiting a team to play in Buncombe County’s Adult Kickball League. Games run Tuesday nights from April 2-May 28 at Buncombe County Sports Park and follow the same basic rules of elementary school kickball. You’re not required to have any previous experience, but the registration price increases from $25 per player to $35 on March 20. You can also register as a free agent which is a great way to meet new friends!
  • Week #12 (March 18-24) – Celebrate the first week of spring with a short hike at Buncombe County Sports Park. A 0.6-mile crushed gravel walking trail loops through the park which includes soccer fields, sand beach volleyball courts, a disc golf course, picnic areas, and a playground. Follow paved roads to explore Sand Hill Community Garden and Sand Hill Community Fruit and Nut Orchard.
  • Week #13 (March 25-31) – With your library card, you also gain free admission to local attractions and museum through the ZOOM pass program. Greenville Zoo has just been added to the program, so take a road trip or stick close to home with a visit to the Asheville Art Museum, Asheville Museum of Science, Hands On! Children’s Museum, The North Carolina Arboretum, Smith-McDowell House Museum, or WNC Nature Center
