Veterans will practice objectivity and a journey inward through intentional movement, art, stillness, and writing in this class led by artist instructor Cara McKinney. This experience will explore and perhaps challenge our ideas of strength, balance, flexibility, and wholeness. Participants can expect to get a bit dirty using pastels for large scale drawing, (don’t worry, it washes out), and to create a life size “body map” bringing to life observations of the observance of self-reflection. Teaching artist Cleaster Cotton will lead this mixed media art workshop through the Asheville Area Arts Council for veteran families . You and your family will have fun exploring the ALNUGE Codes (“Alphabets, Numbers, Geometrics.”) Participants will use basic arts materials to create shapes, lines, colors, and texture resulting in colorful designs, portraits, and narratives. Activities will include drawing, coloring, cutting, and collaging. Families will be introduced to cubism and viewing and reading art. Kenneth Janken is professor of African American and Diaspora studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and director of the UNC Center for the Study of the American South.
Kenneth Janken’s most recent book published in January 2016 is The Wilmington Ten: Violence, Injustice, and the Rise of Black Politics in the 1970s. In addition to The Wilmington Ten, he authored two biographies: Rayford W. Logan and the Dilemma of the African-American Intellectual (1993); and Walter White: Mr. NAACP (2003), which won honorable mention in the Outstanding Book Awards from the Gustavus Myers Center for the Study of Bigotry and Human Rights in North America. He has published academic articles on the Harlem Renaissance, the civil rights movement in the 1940s, African Americans and world affairs, and school desegregation in North Carolina. Mr. Janken’s January 2015 article in the North Carolina Historical Review, "Remembering the Wilmington Ten: African American Politics and Judicial Corruption in the 1970s," won the R.D.W. Connor best article award in North Carolina history.

All screenings will be hosted by North Carolina Film Critics Association member James Rosario (thedailyorca.com), who will introduce each film and lead a discussion after.

Millions of people use the site Wikipedia as their first source of information on any given topic each and every day. These crowd sourced “encyclopedia” entries range from one or two sentences to pages and pages of detailed material.
As a result of systemic racism, implicit cultural bias, and a smaller number of available resources, African Americans and their contributions are not equally represented on this popular site.
Join us in the North Carolina Room as we make an attempt to contribute to, and correct the record when it comes to those people of color who have made a significant impact on our local history. We’ll help provide you with tools, guidance, and of course, research material, to create and edit entries for important African American figures from our area.
