Rabies is a virus that causes acute inflammation of the brain. It is most commonly transmitted through the bite of an infected animal, and it is nearly always fatal when post exposure treatment is not immediately administered. Therefore, all dogs and cats over the age of four months must have a current vaccination against the rabies virus. When their pets are administered the rabies vaccine, owners are required to maintain the official rabies certificate. Dogs and cats receiving the vaccine must always display the rabies tag issued by the administering veterinarian.
The Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office, is seeking interested community groups and potential partner agencies to schedule vaccination clinics in specific communities within the County. Rabies vaccination clinics would be planned for the last Saturday of the month from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Local community organizations and/or community center coordinators are encouraged to contact the Sheriff’s Animal Services Division at 250-6670 to request a clinic visit in their community.
