Erwin High Students Jump Into Envirothon

From Soil & Water Conservation:

Buncombe County Soil & Water Conservation District hosted its Buncombe County Envirothon on March 11, 2020, at the Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education.  Envirothon Teams from Erwin, Nesbitt Discovery Academy, North Buncombe, and TC Roberson high schools competed in the event to prepare for the Area Envirothon. Students started in September practicing weekly, maximizing their chances of a State Championship. What is the Envirothon? It's a team competition to stimulate, reinforce, and enhance interest in the environment and natural resources. Students are tested on their knowledge of soils, forestry, wildlife, aquatic ecology, and current environmental issues. In addition, the Envirothon encourages cooperative decision making and team building. While each student is challenged individually to contribute his or her personal best, the score that counts at the end of the competition is the team score. A team consists of five students from public schools, private schools, home schools, 4H, and FFA groups.

Teams had a successful day of hands-on learning in our natural environment. First place was awarded to Chub Tub, Nesbitt Discovery Academy. Second place was awarded to Solar Powered Potato Squad, Erwin High School. If you have a teams interested in participating in the Envirothon please contact Taira Lance, 828-337-2692 or email taira.lance@buncombecounty.org.

Special thanks to the following Resource Specialists who volunteered their time and knowledge with the students:

Daniel Magnet, Pisgah Center for Wildlife Education

Dalton Buchanan, NC Division of Soil & Water Conservation

Anna Miller, Riverlink

Keisha Lipe, City of Asheville

Keith Bamberger, NC Division of Air Quality
