Variety is the spice of life and Buncombe County Recreation Services is sharing ideas to help you try new things in 2019. Each week, we’ll offer an accessible, low-cost "Just Try It" idea that can help you keep your wellness plan on track, discover a new hobby, or stimulate your mind.

Each month, we’ll suggest activities. “Just Try It” and let us know how it turned out by tagging @BuncombeRecreation on Instagram or Facebook and using hashtag #JustTryItBuncombe

  • Week #1 (Jan. 1-6) – Jan. 5 is National Birding Day. Head over to Collier Cove Nature Preserve, 190 Rhododendron Drive in Arden, where you’ll have a spectacular view of regional birds on over 29 acres of hillside woodland. With no leaves to block your view, January is a great time to become a birder. Check out Audubon’s tips on beginning.
  • Week #2 (Jan. 6-13) – Did you know January is National Hobby Month? Most of us resolve to drop bad distractions and try new things each year. Even if you think you don't have the time, a hobby is worth making time for because of the many emotional, mental, and physical benefits including taking a break, promoting eustress (the positive kind of stress), and meeting new friends who are passionate about the same things as you. Research has found that engaging in hobbies are associated with lower blood pressure, waist circumference, and body mass index. Engaging in hobbies also correlates to higher levels of positive psychosocial states and lower levels of depression and negative affect. Hobbies are good for your mind and your body.
  • Week #3 (Jan. 14-20) – January is also National Mentoring Month. Hands On Asheville works with local middle schools to place Student Success Mentors to provide additional support to students with behavioral issues. In many cases the students in these programs do not have adult role models in their lives. Mentors will act as role models, giving students an adult to look up to while also helping them achieve their personal and behavioral goals.
  • Week #4 (Jan. 21-27) – Visit your local library! Buncombe County has 13 public libraries scattered throughout the county, so there’s most likely one close to your home. January is National Book Month, so why not take the opportunity to get acquainted with your nearest branch?
  • Week #5 (Jan. 28-Feb. 3)Lake Julian Park has an abundance of bass, catfish, brim, crappie, and imported tilapia. Since the lake is used as a cooling agent for Progress Energy, its “thermal” waters allow year-round fishing. Some of the best fishing actually takes place during the winter months. A North Carolina Fishing license and local permit are required.
