Libraries have always been a home for stories, but an exciting, ongoing project at the Fairview library lets you write part of Buncombe County’s narrative. The Fairview History Project is just one of the dynamic programs, from Jedi Training to a popular monthly speaker series, which makes the Fairview branch a unique and vital part of the County’s library portfolio. And there’s no better time to help make history than during the Fairview library’s 20th anniversary that will feature yearlong, special events culminating with a festival in November.
“A lot of people don’t know where we are. But once they get here, they are blown away by our beautiful building in a country neighborhood setting,” says branch manager Jaime McDowell. But for those in the know, there’s an array of adult and children programming to supplement the expansive children’s reading section and spacious reading lounge. One of the more popular programs is the Fairview History Project. “We have trained a slew of volunteers to conduct oral history interviews of folks from the area. These interviews are being recorded, transcribed, and archived in the North Carolina Room Collection. We are also collecting old photographs, yearbooks, architectural plans, and any other ephemera that might be of interest and help tell the history of the Fairview community,” notes McDowell.
Outside of making history, there’s no shortage of subjects being explored in a monthly speaker series. “We host authors, filmmakers, naturalists, and the like. And we do a monthly film series and discussion hosted by a librarian and member of the North Carolina Film Critics Association,” notes McDowell.
And of course kids have summer-based programs like the Fancy Nancy Gala and Star Wars Jedi Training Academy.

- Monthly adult book club meetings every third Tuesday of the month from 7-8 p.m.
