Beginners' Nature Photography Class with Bill Pattison

Come to the North Asheville Library for a free beginners' class in nature photography. Photographer Bill Pattison, whose images have been published in Our State Magazine and displayed publically in various local venues, will mentor participants through the basics: essential gear, best local photo spots, lighting, composition, and more. The class will be held indoors at 5:30 p.m on June 8 and will be followed a week later by a guided photo field trip.

 

The field trip will take place at 1 a.m. on Saturday, June 16, and attendees will walk from the library to the bird sanctuary next door for some guided hands-on photography experience. A different date for the walk will be chosen in case of rain. It is not necessary to attend the field trip in order to attend the class. No registration required. As always, these events are free and open to the public.

Summer of Noir Film Series: Touch of Evil

Join us on Tuesday, June 12 at 6 p.m. for the second of four free film screenings and discussions on the highly influential Film Noir genre. Events will be hosted by North Carolina Film Critics Association member James Rosario, who will introduce each film and lead a discussion after.

After a car bomb explodes on U.S. soil near a border town, Mexican drug enforcement officer Miguel Vargas (Charlton Heston) becomes involved in the investigation. Also involved is Hank Quinlan (Orson Welles), a surly and corrupt U.S. police captain. Conspiracies and frame-jobs are uncovered in what is considered "the last great film noir." Directed by Orson Welles, 95 minutes, not rated.

 

Family of Earth: A Southern Mountain Childhood with Jim Stokely

Jim Stokely will discuss the significance of his mother, Wilma Dykeman's autobiography Family of Earth: A Southern Mountain Childhood.  Discovered as a typewritten manuscript only after her death in 2006 and published in 2016, the book allows us to see into the young mind of the author, who would become one of the American South's most prolific and storied writers.

 

Copies of the book will be for sale for $18, three dollars of which will be donated to the Friends of Weaverville Library.

Come to North Asheville Library for a free all-ages herpetology presentation about snakes! Join reptile enthusiast Maya Plantamura as she speaks about snakes and the many misconceptions that affect these beautiful but often-misunderstood animals. The presentation will include guided interactions with six live non-venomous snakes and is open to all members of the public. No tickets required. Free and open to the public.

At 6 p.m. on Friday, June 15, North Asheville Library is happy to host The Ridgetop Ramblers! A three-piece bluegrass outfit from Fairview, North Carolina, The Ridgetop Ramblers are a musical project from some of the same musicians who play with the popular local country/Americana band, The Fairview Flyers. This show is free and open to the public, and no tickets are required.

Beginning Photographers' Guided Nature Walk

Join nature photographer Bill Pattison at North Asheville Library for a guided nature walk for beginning photographers. At 11 a.m., participants will gather in the library's community room in order to set out for a gentle hike through the next door bird sanctuary with their cameras. Pattison, whose images have been published in Our State Magazine and exhibited in various local venues, will provide tips and advice for photographers along the way as the group searches for some of the many interesting and beautiful photography subjects Western North Carolina has to offer.

 

This event is the sequel to a beginners' photography class, which Pattison will be leading at the library on June 8 at 5:30 p.m. It is recommended but not necessary that participants attend the class if they wish to also attend the walk. No registration required. As always, these events are free and open to the public.

 

The Ballad of R & J: A Bluegrass Musical
