The Buncombe County Public Library System is honoring female authors between the World War time periods with a lecture and film series at the West Asheville Library taking place between August and December.
When experts talk of the United States 20th Century literary flowering, they refer primarily to male writers during the 20s and 30s, such as Lewis, Faulkner, Fitzgerald, and Wolfe. But there were also wonderful female writers during that time period. For example, discussed on Thursday, August 10 is Ellen Glasgow. On Thursdays, September 7 and 14, you’ll learn all about Julia Peterkin. This entire program will take place over eight events, five free lectures and three documentary film showings – with refreshments provided. Writers to be discussed later include Olive Tilford Dargan, Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, and Zora Neale Hurston.
