Board of Elections Swears in Board and Welcomes New Members

Buncombe County has a new County Board of Elections (CBE). On July 20, the board met to swear in new and reappointed members. Their term will be for two years. Chief District Court Judge Calvin Hill led the swearing-in ceremony for newly appointed Steven Aceto, Board Chair Jake Quinn, Elizabeth Newman, John J. Watson, and Linda Block. Aceto is a retired attorney and previously served on the Metropolitan Sewerage District (MSD) board. Elizabeth Newman was appointed Secretary.

CBE Chairman Jake Quinn thanked former board member Stephen Duncan for his four years of service. “I will miss Stephen Duncan,” Quinn says. “Intelligent and focused, an experienced public administrator with a positive outlook and a great sense of humor, Stephen's been an asset to our Board, and a terrific colleague. Best wishes to him in his new enterprise! Happily, my disappointment in losing Stephen as a team member has been eased by the appointment of Steve Aceto to replace him, I am grateful to have someone with Steve's experience and familiarity with Buncombe joining our team, and look forward to working with him.”

On Sept. 14, board member John J. Watson stepped down after nine years to accept a position out of state, and Robert “Bo” Carpenter was sworn in to fill the remainder of his term.

Jay Watson served Buncombe County with distinction on the Board of Elections spending five years as Board Chair. “We have worked well together, and I will miss his experience, and his passion for good government,” notes Quinn.  “Best wishes to him in his new role as county attorney in Georgetown, SC. At the same time, I am excited to welcome Bo Carpenter to the Buncombe Board. We are fortunate to have someone with Bo's experience and familiarity with Buncombe and western North Carolina joining our team, and look forward to working with him.”
