Buncombe County Deputies Involved in Shooting

Deputies were involved in a shooting while attempting a warrant service.  Buncombe County Sheriff’s deputies arrived at Elkins Road in the Leicester community October 9 at 3:09 pm to serve a warrant on the subject for failing to register as a sex offender. 

While approaching the residence where the subject lived, the deputies encountered the subject in the woods where he fired an arrow from a hunting bow at the deputies.  At that time, the deputies discharged their weapons, striking the subject.

The subject was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics; the deputies involved in the incident were not injured.  The SBI is conducting an investigation which is standard in these types of incidents. The deputies are on paid administrative leave, which is also standard procedure in these types of incidents. 

The subject had an extensive criminal history, with open warrants for sex offenses in California and Washington; his name is being withheld pending the notification of next of kin. The investigation into this incident is ongoing.
