Scientists need your help to study animals everywhere – including your local parks! Through the end of February, ecoEXPLORE (Experiences Promoting Learning Outdoors for Research and Education) focuses on ornithology, the study of birds. Join us to celebrate our favorite birds, the ducks at Lake Julian Park.
Drop in from 10 a.m.-noon on Saturday, Jan. 18, to observe local and migratory duck species. Experts from The North Carolina Arboretum and Lake Julian Park Rangers will lead fun hands-on duck actives. Meet near the “old playground” for all the ducking fun! All ecoEXPLORERS who attend receive five bonus points.

Lake Julian Park is located on 406 Overlook Road Extension in Arden. When you arrive, proceed through the one-way road that circles the main park until you see event signs. Black Mountain Library also hosts Introduction to Ornithology on Monday, January 13, at 4 p.m. as part of ecoEXPLORE’s ornithology season.
ecoEXPLORE is an incentive-based citizen science program for children in grades K-8. Developed by The North Carolina Arboretum, this innovative pilot program combines science exploration with kid-friendly technology to foster a fun learning environment for children while encouraging them to explore the outdoors and participate in citizen science. Citizen science encourages volunteers of any age to collect and submit scientific information to real life scientists, which will assist in their research and data analysis. Scientists around the world need help collecting data. By becoming a citizen scientist, participants can help professional scientists understand changes in the environment and see how these changes impact plants, animals and other natural resources.
