Walk with Ease: Going on Now

Do you have up to 60 extra minutes a day? Come learn how to turn those minutes into active living and take a Walk with Ease in one of our beautiful Buncombe County Parks. Can’t make it the entire 60 minutes? No problem! We will cater your walking to the amount of time you are able to spend with us. Learn ways to manage aging and arthritis through active living with our program.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 52 million Americans have arthritis, including about half of all adults over age 65. Almost 23 million American report that the condition limits their physical activity, and members of racial and ethnic minority communities tend to suffer disproportionately. Research has shown that low-intensity physical activity performed on a regular basis can reduce pain, improve functioning, elevate mood and delay the onset of disability.

Buncombe County Recreation Services is teaming up with the Arthritis Foundation and the National Recreation and Parks Association to bring you a free six week walking course to help manage aging and arthritis through active living. This course will be offered three times a week for the entire six weeks at three of our different parks. Mondays from 10am-11am at Lake Julian Park, Wednesdays 10am-11am at the Buncombe County Sports Park, and Fridays 10am-11am at Charles D. Owen Park. It is recommended to attend all 18 sessions in order to receive proven results. Our first session will start on Monday, September 17. Don’t forget to wear comfortable walking shoes.
