Free Film Screening: Project Nim

Come to the library for a free screening of the thought-provoking documentary Project Nim. In the 1070s, linguist Herbert S. Terrace investigated the language abilities of chimpanzees by acquiring a baby chimpanzee and placing him in a home with human surrogate parents. The chimp, named Nim Chimpsky (a pun on Noam Chomsky, who had previously theorized that only humans are biologically wired for language), was raised as a human child and developed a range of vocabulary in ASL.
Project Nim documents the story of the experiment, asking ethical questions and exploring the emotional states of both Nim and the scientists. This program is free and open to the public, and no tickets are required.

Join Dr. Margo Capparelli of Equinox Ranch for a public screening of the award-winning short documentary, Crisis Hotline: Veterans Press 1. Crisis Hotline profiles a team of trained responders at a VA Medical Center in New York as they field calls from veterans and active-duty military personnel in crisis.
After the film, Dr. Capparelli will lead a discussion and speak about her organization, Equinox Ranch, a safe space in Cullowhee where veterans heal with the help of trained professionals and compassionate volunteers. This program is free and open to the public, and no tickets are required.
