Services for Children & Family

Families in Buncombe County come in many shapes and sizes. And each one is unique with its own set of strengths and needs. Health & Human Services supports families and children with a number of programs to help bring stability to daily life.

How You Can Help

There are steps all of us can take to connect with and provide for young people in foster care that are still waiting to be adopted. That may look like buying extra holiday gifts for kids in foster care, participating as a , volunteering as a Guardian Ad Litem, donating to a college fund for foster youth, or maybe even becoming a foster or adoptive parent.

BCHHS is in need of Community Resource Volunteers (CRV) who make a positive difference in the lives of children in our community.  CRVs participate in Permanency Planning Review (PPR) Meetings, where permanency options, placement decisions, well-being issues, and safety planning are discussed amongst the case social workers, Guardian ad Litems, families, foster parents and children. These meetings last approximately two hours and volunteers are able to sign up each month based on their availability.

Children have no control over the decisions that are made for them by adults yet these decisions have significant impacts on their lives. Community Resource Volunteers are able to provide a neutral perspective to other meeting participants focusing on the “big picture” and making case recommendations from a broader perspective.
